Whelen acoustic mass warning siren with visual alert LED lights
Mass Notification Systems
Mass Notification Products - Audible warning products that alert, inform, and direct communities in response to man-made or natural events.
In the event of a civil emergency, there can be a requirement to alert the public to the hazard. In the past these public warning systems were known by names such as “air raid sirens” or “tsunami warning sirens” according to the purpose they were set up for. At risk populations have been informed by regional authorities of the procedures to follow to ensure their safety. This often involved evacuation to safe areas, or other actions to address the risk at hand. Different actions would be managed by different tones or sound patterns.
The New Zealand coast line has areas of considerable tsunami risk, and there have been quite a number of systems installed along the coast lines to manage this risk.
However with the introduction of the new TS03/14 technical standard, these systems are no longer adequate to meet current needs.
Modern systems such as those Scott Technical provide, that are manufactured by Whelan in the USA, also provide a voice alert system, that can be configured to produce a number of standard siren signals, as well as public address messages.
This system has several benefits:
It can provide simple and clear threat information
The instructions can vary according to the potential threat
Can provide specific information about unique local conditions and situations
These instructions can also inform visitors to the area who are unfamiliar with the local hazards
Strengthen community engagement, awareness, and education with audible tests
Inform communities that an activation is a test, thereby reducing stress or panic during scheduled system tests
Silent tests may also be performed on a regular basis to ensure integrity of the system, and its components
